What to Do When Someone Owes You Money and Ignores You
Steps to take when a friend or family member is avoiding you about money they owe.
You lent money to someone. Now they are not responding to your messages. Your calls go to voicemail. They are avoiding you.
Here is what to do.
First: Do Not Assume the Worst
Before you get angry, consider that they might be:
- Embarrassed and ashamed - Going through something you do not know about - Avoiding the conversation because they do not know what to say
This does not excuse the behavior, but understanding it helps you respond effectively.
Step 1: Send a Clear, Non-Accusatory Message
Try something like:
"Hey, I know money stuff is awkward, but I need to talk about the loan. Can we find a time this week? Even if you can not pay right now, I just want to know where things stand."
This opens the door without attacking them.
Step 2: Give Them a Deadline
If they do not respond in a week, send a follow-up:
"I have not heard back and I'm getting worried. Can you please respond by Friday? I'd rather work this out between us."
Step 3: Be Direct About Consequences
If still no response:
"I really need to resolve this. If I do not hear from you by [date], I will need to consider other options. I do not want to do that, but I need some kind of response."
Step 4: Consider Your Options
If they continue to ignore you:
Small Claims Court - Usually for amounts under $5,000-$10,000 (varies by state) - No lawyer needed - Filing fee is usually $30-$100 - You will need documentation
Collection Agency - They take a percentage (often 25-50%) - May damage the relationship permanently - More effective for larger amounts
Write It Off - Accept the loss - Decide if the relationship is worth salvaging - Learn for next time
Step 5: Protect Yourself for the Future
Whatever happens:
- Never lend more than you can afford to lose - Always put loans in writing - Use a tracking system both parties can see - Have clear terms before money changes hands
The Hard Truth
Some people will not pay you back. The money may be gone. The question becomes: is pursuing it worth more damage to the relationship and your peace of mind?
Only you can answer that.
