The 5-Minute Conversation That Saves Friendships
A quick checklist to go through before any personal loan between friends or family.
You are about to lend money to someone you care about. Take five minutes to have this conversation first. It will save you months of awkwardness later.
The 5-Minute Checklist
1. Confirm the Amount (30 seconds) "Just to be clear: I'm lending you $X, right?"
Write it down or put it in an app. Both of you should see the same number.
2. Discuss When Payments Start (1 minute) "When do you think you can start paying me back?"
Be realistic. If they need a few months to get on their feet, that is okay. Just agree on it now.
3. Agree on Payment Amounts (1 minute) "What amount works for you each month?"
Let them suggest first. If it is too low, negotiate gently. If it is reasonable, accept it.
4. Choose a Tracking Method (1 minute) "How should we keep track of payments?"
Options: - An app like JimBondy (both see the same record) - A shared note or spreadsheet - Something you both trust
5. Discuss What-Ifs (1 minute 30 seconds) "What happens if something comes up and you cannot pay one month?"
Agree that they will communicate early. No ghosting. Life happens, but silence creates resentment.
Why This Works
This conversation does three things:
1. Sets expectations so nobody is guessing 2. Creates accountability without awkwardness 3. Shows mutual respect for the money and the relationship
The Hardest Part
Starting the conversation. Once you do, it takes five minutes and prevents problems that can last years.
Your friendship is worth five minutes.
