6 Warning Signs Someone Will Not Pay You Back
Red flags to watch for before lending money to friends or family.
Not everyone who asks to borrow money will pay it back. Here are warning signs to watch for before you lend.
1. They Get Defensive About Terms
"You don't trust me?" when you ask about repayment is a red flag. People with good intentions appreciate clarity.
2. Vague Reasons for the Money
"I just need it" or constantly changing explanations suggest they are not being honest about where the money is going.
3. History of Unpaid Debts
Have they borrowed from others and not repaid? Have they borrowed from you before and not paid it back? Past behavior predicts future behavior.
4. No Repayment Plan
If they cannot explain how they will pay you back, they probably have not thought about it. Or they do not plan to.
5. Pressuring You to Decide Now
"I need to know today" or emotional manipulation ("If you really cared about me...") are tactics, not conversations. Good borrowers give you time to think.
6. They Avoid Written Records
"We don't need to write it down, we're family" is convenient for someone who does not plan to honor the agreement.
What to Do
If you see these signs:
- Say no. It is okay to protect yourself. - Offer alternatives. Help them find resources instead of money. - Set strict terms. If you do lend, make it small and track everything.
Trust Your Gut
If something feels off, it probably is. You can love someone and still recognize they are not good with money.
Protecting yourself is not selfish. It is wise.
