Rent Payment Proof: Receipts, Transfers, and Roommate Payment Chains

Understand what a payment screenshot, roommate acknowledgment, landlord receipt, and bank record each contribute to a rent history.

Different rent records answer different questions. A payment-app screenshot can show a roommate transfer; a landlord receipt can show receipt by the landlord; a bank statement can help match the transaction date and amount. None should silently stand in for another.

Build One Entry per Transfer

Name both sides of every payment. Add a note such as “September household rent share” or “September rent paid to landlord,” then attach the evidence for that specific transfer. This prevents a roommate reimbursement from being mislabeled as a direct landlord payment.

Acknowledgment Has a Narrow Meaning

An acknowledgment in JimBondy means another record participant responded to the entry. It is not a notarization, independent verification, determination of tenancy, release of lease obligations, or credit-bureau report.

Keep Source Documents Outside the Tracker Too

Retain the signed lease, amendments, landlord statements or receipts, and original payment records. Local landlord-tenant and receipt rules vary, so use the applicable housing agency, legal-aid resource, or qualified lawyer for legal questions.
